Description
In a quiet glen nestled between the Silver Hills, there lived a most extraordinary cow named Rose. She was no ordinary bovine, for her coat shimmered like moonlight on fresh snow, and the tips of her ears glowed faintly with a soft lavender hue. The local villagers spoke of her in hushed voices, calling her the Whispering Cow, for it was said she could understand the wind and speak with the stars.
Rose belonged to no one and yet watched over everyone. When the rains failed, the crops shrivelled, or babies were born with weak lungs, it was Rose who would appear at the edge of the fields or the threshold of a worried home. She would simply stand, calm and still, and by morning, all would be well. No one ever saw her come or go.
The truth, though few knew it, was that Rose had once been the companion of a great forest spirit—the Guardian of the Glade. When the Guardian fell in an ancient battle to protect the land, he whispered his final blessing into her ear, gifting her a portion of his magic and a promise that she would never age, nor suffer, so long as she chose to care for the living things of the valley.
One spring, a storm unlike any other rolled down from the north. Dark creatures rode in its wake—shadow wolves with eyes of flame. The villagers, terrified, gathered in the temple and prayed. That night, Rose stood alone at the head of the glen, her silver coat blazing with inner light. She lowered her head, not in fear, but in silent warning.
The wolves came.
And they did not pass.
No one knows quite what happened that night. Some say they heard thunder that sounded like hooves striking stone, and others swear they saw the stars fall from the sky and circle her like a crown. But by dawn, the storm had broken, the fields were untouched, and Rose stood at peace, her gaze soft and knowing.
From that day forward, the villagers left garlands of wildflowers by the glen, whispering their thanks to the cow who bore a forest’s heart.
Rose remains there still, a quiet guardian of peace and magic, chewing clover beneath the silver hills and watching over all who dwell below.
